Motorcycle maintenance
Why your motorcycle battery struggles in winter (and what to do about it)

Cold reduces your motorcycle battery's capacity and, if the bike sits for weeks, starting it can become mission impossible. Here is how to look after it and when it is time to replace it.
The problem: why a motorcycle battery finds it harder to start the bike in winter
When temperatures drop, a motorcycle battery loses its ability to deliver power. Cold slows down the chemical reactions inside it, so even a charged battery finds it harder to turn the starter motor. Add engine oil that has thickened in the cold, and the battery has to work much harder.
What happens if the bike sits for weeks?
If you don't use the bike for weeks, the battery goes through something called self-discharge, the natural loss of energy while the vehicle is switched off. On top of that, systems such as the alarm or the clock draw a small amount of current all the time. If the battery runs completely flat and stays that way for a long time, it can be damaged permanently and never charge properly again.
The solution: battery maintainer vs. charger
To stop the battery running flat, the ideal is to use a battery maintainer. A maintainer is a smart device that feeds the battery and, when it detects that it is at 100%, reduces or cuts the current to avoid overcharging. A traditional charger, on the other hand, supplies a constant current and has to be disconnected by hand: leave it connected too long and you can ruin the battery by overcharging it.
The proof: how to tell when the battery is at the end of its life
If you have tried charging it and the bike still won't start, or the starter motor turns very slowly, the battery may be at the end of its life. Another clear symptom is a battery that takes a charge but loses it within hours or days without being connected to anything. In those cases the problem isn't the cold: the internal plates have already degraded.
Can we help at Vila Motor Center?
If your bike is struggling to start these days, or you think you need a new battery, drop by our workshop in Sant Pere de Ribes. We can check the condition of your current battery and advise you on the best option for your model, with no obligation.
What you ask us
Can I use a car charger on my motorcycle?
It is not recommended unless it is a smart charger or a maintainer. Traditional car chargers deliver too much current for a motorcycle battery and can damage it. It is always better to use a charger made for motorcycles.
How long does a motorcycle battery last?
Its life depends on many factors, such as use, climate and whether it has been kept charged while the bike was not in use. There is no guaranteed lifespan, but with good care a battery can last several years.
