The motorcycle won't start: what to check before calling the workshop

A motorcycle not starting has three versions, and each points to a different place: it does nothing at all, it clicks, or it turns over without starting. Before calling, check the things on this list: half the time it gets resolved in the garage.

First things first: the four classics

The handlebar emergency switch in the run position, the bike in neutral or with the clutch squeezed, the side stand up, and fuel in the tank. It sounds like a joke until the day it happens to you. Also check that the key is in the ignition position and not just in the lock position.

It does nothing: no lights or dashboard

If nothing turns on when you turn the ignition, it is the battery, a loose terminal, or a main fuse. Check that the terminals are tight and free of sulfate. If there are lights but they are very weak, the battery is discharged: a maintenance charger will recover it if it is not dead.

It clicks but does not turn over

The click is the starter relay working with a battery that lacks the power to move the engine. Nine times out of ten it is a discharged or depleted battery. If it keeps clicking with a charged battery, it could be the relay or the starter motor itself.

It turns over but does not start

The starter motor works, but the engine does not catch. It lacks spark or lacks fuel. Listen to see if the fuel pump hums for a couple of seconds when you turn the ignition; if not, check the fuses. A wet or very worn spark plug, a soaked air filter, or the key immobilizer not recognizing the chip are the next suspects.

What you should not do

Insisting with the starter until the battery is drained, using car jump starters roughly, or pushing a fuel-injected motorcycle downhill hoping it starts: if it does not have enough voltage, the ECU will not work. And disconnecting the battery to 'reset' erases the errors we would need to read.

How we do it in the workshop

We check the battery and charge, power supply, ignition, and ECU, and we tell you what it is and how much it costs before touching anything. If it does not start and you cannot bring it in, call us and we will see how to do it. Book an appointment online, it is free, and tell us which of the three symptoms it has.
