125cc scooter maintenance: what's due and when

The 125cc scooter is the bike that does the most riding around the Garraf and the one that sees the fewest services: it's used every day and forgotten until it breaks down. Get four things done on time and it will last for years. Here's the list, in order of what people forget most.

Engine oil

This is the job that decides how long the engine lives, and the one most people stretch. Intervals on 125s are short, between 3,000 and 6,000 km depending on the model, and in town it's better to stay at the lower end. With a new oil filter if it has one, and to the specification in the manual.

Transmission oil

A scooter has a second oil in the final drive casing, and hardly anyone remembers it. It's usually changed every second or third engine oil change, depending on the manual. A bearing-type noise from the rear wheel is sometimes just this oil worn out.

Belt, rollers and clutch

The variator belt and rollers wear without warning: the scooter pulls less from low speed, is slow to pick up or jerks when pulling away. They're checked at every major service and replaced at the mileage in the manual, on many models between 15,000 and 25,000 km. A belt that snaps on the move leaves you stranded.

Spark plug and air filter

A worn spark plug makes starting harder and fuel consumption higher; so does a dirty air filter. They're two cheap parts replaced by mileage, and in town, with dust and damp, they last less than on open roads.

Brakes and tyres

Pads and, if fitted, rear brake shoes; brake fluid every two years; tyres with tread, no cracks and at the pressure in the manual. On a scooter the front does almost all the braking, and that's the one to keep an eye on.

How we do it at the workshop

A scooter service in the order your model calls for: oils, transmission, filters, spark plug, brakes, tyres and lights, with a quote before we touch anything and a heads-up on what will be due next time. Use our free online booking and come at your booked time.

What you ask us

How often should it have a full service?

Once a year or at the mileage in the manual, whichever comes first. In between, engine oil when it's due and tyre pressures every month.

Does a scooter need a run on the open road now and then?

It does it good: a ride at full operating temperature drives the moisture out of the oil and clears the exhaust. On five-minute trips alone, the engine hardly ever warms up properly.

It pulls less from low speed. Is that serious?

It's almost always the belt and rollers, or the centrifugal clutch. It isn't serious if it's checked soon; it is if the belt ends up snapping.
